Isobutylene-Isoprene Rubber (IIR)

Butyl rubber (IIR) is a copolymer of isobutylene with a small amount of isoprene. The largely saturated polyisobutylene backbone gives very low gas permeability, good heat and weather aging, and high damping. The isoprene units provide the cure sites used in vulcanization.

Industry Applications

Tire inner liners, curing bladders, pharmaceutical stoppers and seals, cable compounds, and vibration-damping goods. Halogenated butyl is the related subtype used where faster cure and adhesion to diene rubbers matter.
