High Impact Polystyrene (HIPS)
HIPS (high impact polystyrene) is polystyrene modified with polybutadiene rubber. The rubber phase raises impact strength while the polystyrene matrix keeps stiffness, gloss, and straightforward injection, extrusion, and thermoforming. It is typically opaque rather than crystal-clear. Rubber level sets the balance of toughness, gloss, and flow.
Industry Applications
Refrigerator liners and appliance housings, food and dairy packaging, toys, disposable tableware, electronics housings, and thermoformed sheet. Crystal GPPS covers clear, unmodified polystyrene; EPS covers expandable bead for foam.
